The Ellie chronicles is set in outback Australia near a new border of a nation which attacked Australia. In previous  books Ellie was part of raids to attack the enemy and during this book she becomes part of them to.  This creates a war zone setting and promotes insecurity, an example of this is at the start of the book between pages 8and 12 where Ellie’s parents are shot dead by the enemy in her own home, this also gives a sense of comaraderie within the nations.

The Ellie Chronicles – While i live; Point of view

  1. This novel is written in a 1st person view
  2. The novel is almost written as a recount of what happened in this part of her life. She add’s her thoughts and opinions throughout the book.
  3. This point of veiw gives the reader a better insight into what it is like to be in the situations written in the book. the advantages of this is that the reader can empathize with the characters  more easily and really see whats happening.
  4. The story would lose a lot of structure and body if told in another point of view and to change it would be inappropriate in the way that if it was told in a third person omniscient view the bonds between the character and reader would be shattered.

Homer

Symbolism of name

  • Homer is a very strong name and it is used to emphasize his strength

Speech

  • He and all the other characters speak with the same colloquialism’s of the country but often speak without words but facial expressions, also, when things go wrong he tends to swear a lot.

Appearance

  • Homer is described as ‘big’ and ’strong’ and wears the same things as Ellie

Actions

  • He is pretty mush the leader of the pack due to his dominant nature
  • This doesn’t impact on this story but in the series before most of the attacks on the enemy are his idea.
  • Homer is your stereotypical veteran army sgt. He acts on impulse and almost all the time saves lives and time.

Other

  • Homer is your stereotypical veteran army sgt. He acts on impulse and almost all the time saves lives and time. In the situation that he is in thius gives him an edge against the enemy when he goes on raids
  • Homer lives next door to Ellie, on another property, and he is another childhood friend. His appearance is never described totally, but he is “big” and “strong” and also of Greek parentage. He was famous in the Wirrawee district pre-war for his pranks and antics, many of which Ellie reflects on during the series; however, when the war comes, he reveals himself as a leader. He guides the group almost single-handedly through the first book and early in the second book. His authority is diminished, however, when the group learns that Homer took a shotgun on one of their guerrilla attacks: the group agreed not to take firearms, as their use was limited and if they were caught with them, they would have been, in Ellie’s words, “put against a tree and shot”. The incident was a cause of much friction between Homer and Ellie. The ensuing argument between Homer and Ellie was in many ways a true revealer to the characters, not only Homer and Ellie. The diminished respect for Homer does not seem to hurt the group too much however, because it is somewhere at this point that the leadership moves to Ellie and Robyn together with Homer

Ellie

  • ‘Elle’ in french means female in french which creates an irony in the way she acts as she takes on the roles of both a stereotypical male and stereotypical female by running the farm, looking after a small child and doing the housework.

Speech

  • She uses the typical country teenage colloquialisms

Appearance

  • The only clothing she wears is her T-shirt and jeans mainly because of farm-work.
  • She never wears makeup because she doesn’t see the point.

Actions

  • She and her gang act like the SES chain of command, whoever has the expertise in area of need becomes the commander and the others follow.
  • The story is based on here life after a war against ’the country’. It’s a first person view from her.
  • The chararcters are built up in the 7 book series which is before this book and their actions are based upon events which happened in the series which is a downside to readers who haven’t read the previous books, but they’ll get over it.
  • She is Stereotypically a farm girl. A female who has had to take on her dads job and is very strong willed against the stereotyping of a female.
